Music Memories with Reckless Kelly

Just like a scent can be a powerful memory trigger, the sound of a song can also transport you through time.  For me it’s not a specific song but a band, Reckless Kelly.

I have a lot of memorable moments centered around listening to Reckless Kelly.  Road trips to Colorado listening to their newly released 2005 album Wicked Twisted Road on repeat, free shows at Hills Café where I would discreetly climb onto the cow to see the stage, intimate shows at Momo’s with brothers Micky and the Motorcars, numerous shows at the “Original” Antones, birthday concerts at ACL Live, unexpected encounters with band members and their families, I could go on.

My most memorable Reckless Kelly moment was in January 2007 when I had just met my  husband-to-be (seriously, we were married in October 2009).  We had been on our 1st date and were talking every day over the next week.  I had planned on attending the Reckless Kelly show at Gruene Hall and asked my future husband if he would like to go with me for what would be our 2nd date.

I had just started working at Allens Boots on South Congress that month.  The Friday of the concert, I helped a wonderful couple visiting from Connecticut.  Asking them what brought them to Texas, the husband replied, “We’re here to see our son play drums in a show with his band.”

Thinking to myself, there are tons of live shows in Austin on Friday nights, Austin is the Live Music Capital of the World, I said, “Who does he play for?”

He replied, “Reckless Kelly. Have you heard of them?”

Floored doesn’t even begin to describe my entire reaction.  I responded immediately with, “I LOVE RECKLESS KELLY!  You’re Jay Nazz’s parents! I’m going to their show tonight too!”

They were not expecting to meet someone who knew of their son, let alone going to the same concert.   This story reminds me in some ways Austin may be big city but it still has a small town feel. Needless to say, that night was awesome.  Not only was the show fantastic, but I also had great company plus ran into the Nazzes again at the end of the show.  What a fun memory.

Below are a few blasts from the past photos at the “Original” Antone's Night Club on 5th Street in Austin, circa 2006.
